Sandy Nadeau has had more than 20 years of Early Childhood teaching experience. She operated her own highly successful Children’s Center for more than 15 years in New York before relocating to Kennebunk in 1999. She worked as a professor and as the director of the University of New England Campus School before founding Cocoons in September of 2001.
Sandy graduated from the University of Maine in Orono as an All Maine Woman and earned her Masters of Education from the State University of New York. Sandy has been happily married to Ed Nadeau of Kennebunk for more than 40 years and has three successful grown children and five grandchildren. As you can imagine, she is hoping for many more grandchildren!
Miss Peggy joined the Cocoons teaching staff in September 2003 as the lead teacher in our full-day kindergarten/ 1st grade program.
Peggy earned her undergraduate degree from the University of Maine at Farmington. She has had many years of teaching experience in both the public school system and as the lead teacher at Kennebunk Montessori for five years. Miss Peggy is a Maine State Certified Kindergarten/ 1st Grade Teacher. She is also the mother of two successful children. Peggy’s compassionate way of dealing with children and her never ending sense of humor make her an ideal early childhood teacher.
Sarah joined the Cocoons staff as the Director of Finance and Admissions in 2006 and as preschool teacher in 2012.
Sarah earned her bachelor’s degree from Colby College with a concentration in Mathematics with a minor in Education. Before joining Cocoons she was a public accountant in Portland for 5 years, as well as, an accounting manager at Pierce Promotions for several years. She spends her free time chasing around her two young boys and enjoying the Maine outdoors.
Jen joined the Cocoons staff in 2012. Jen comes from a family full of teachers! She holds both a bachelors degree in elementary education and a masters degree in literacy education. Jen is also a trained yoga instructor.
Jen taught in the public school system for 10 years before having children; has done extensive substituting; and began teaching gifted math to first graders at Cocoons during the 2012-13 school year. Her passions are both music and yoga which she plans to share with her students at Cocoons on a regular basis.
Jen lives in Kennebunkport with her husband and two very special children. She is an active member of the Consolidated School’s PTA and serves on the grant committee of the Education Foundation of the Kennebunks and Arundel.
Elizabeth Straka has over 20 years of experience as a speech-language therapist. Prior to moving to Maine in 2000 she was a professor at the University of Georgia Athens and the University of Oregon. She is passionate about children and strives to connect with each child while focusing on their strengths as they embrace a speech, language and/or social development challenge.
Elizabeth did her undergraduate and graduate work at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and her doctoral studies at the University of Oregon. She enjoys helping children learn in play-based activities where they can move, communicate, and interact with their environment in a meaningful and natural manner. She has an office in Kennebunk and offers Cocoons on-site consultation, evaluation and treatment services on request.
We were thrilled to welcome Miss Kaitlyn as a member of the Cocoons staff in 2015. Miss Kaitlyn earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Southern Maine in 2014 with a concentration in Elementary Education. As part of her education, she has had impressive field experience student teaching in a kindergarten classroom in Wells; supporting early english learners from all over the world; working with children with special needs; and facilitating early literacy development.
Miss Kaitlyn has also worked as a full-time nanny and as the kids out-sitedirector at the York County YMCA in Biddeford. Clearly Miss Kaitlyn brings a lot of wonderful experience and education to the classroom, but most importantly she brings a contagious enthusiasm and love for young children! She is adored by children, parents, and the Cocoons staff!
We were thrilled to welcome Miss Lydia as a member of the Cocoons staff in 2016. She will be a co-teacher in the toddler room. Lydia earned her BLS in Early Childhood Education from the University of Maine. Her passion is teaching toddlers! Lydia not only has years of experience designing and implementing developmentally appropriate curriculum, she pricers herself on maintaining strong and open communication with parents. She loves animals, outdoor exploration, and gardening which she plans to make integral parts of the toddler curriculum.
We were thrilled to welcome Miss Shannon as a member of the Cocoons staff in 2016. She will be a co-teacher in the toddler room. Shannon earned a BS in Childhood Studies from Plymouth State University. She has impressive experience teaching in a Montessori school where she planned daily lessons; was in charge of the composting system; and designed and maintained indoor and outdoor gardens. Shannon has been a camp counselor, nanny and an apprentice at the Rancho Mastatal Sustainability & Educational Site in Costa Rice. Farm-based education is Shannon’s are of focus for early education. Her mission is to create a fun-filled engaging environment. She loves telling stories, being silly, doing yoga, and exploring in nature.
Lindsey teaches in the first year preschool classroom. Lindsey is a Kennebunkport resident and mother of two sons. She has been actively involved at the Consolidated School where she has been a volunteer and substitute teacher for the past several years. Lindsey earned her BS in education from Keene State College. She speaks fluent Spanish and teaches Cocooners how to speak Spanish. Lindsey is an accomplished athlete; loves the outdoors; and is passionate about making outdoor exploration an integral part of the Cocoons curriculum.
Cary is our aftercare teacher. Cary earned a BA with Dean’s Honors from Connecticut College in New London, CT. While at college she was a student leader in the Connecticut College Children’s Program. Cary has worked as a Nanny and child care provider for children ages infant to 11 year olds and as an administrative assistant at Potrero Kids Preschool in San Francisco. Carry is energetic; loves the outdoors; adores animals; and is more than excited about planning fun-filled activities for children to enjoy at the end of the school day
